Translation

Pallavi

Even a stone will melt one day, singing the glory of Skandha. Oh, human form, don’t you realize that singing His glory is the only way to overcome your fate?

Anupallavi

Why do you then wander around day and night, without the thought of Arunachalan[1]’s son, thereby degrading yourself and losing your status?

Charanam

A fellow spent all his time as a youth in bed with slender waisted women and gave up clear thought. He wasted all his wealth in petty pleasures and became near crazy. He ruined his physical health as well and became thin as a fiber. In his desperation, looking at the stage where now he would have to bend rather than stand tall, he decided to end his life by jumping off the cliff into an abyss. The Lord of Thirucheeralaivay[2] rushed to the spot on His peacock and received and supported him. The stone that witnessed this merciful act of Lord Muruga one day will melt, singing His glory.

Author’s Note

The charanam of this song references the life story of Saint Arunagirinathar. Czech Indologist Kamil Zvelebil places Arunagirinadhar’s time between 1370 and 1450 CE. Arunagirinadhar spent his youth pursuing a life of debauchery, spending all his wealth on women and sexual pleasure. At a point in life when he became poor and infected with a contagious disease, everyone left him, and he became depressed. One day he decided to commit suicide, tried to jump off the temple wall. Lord Muruga appeared at that point and offered his helping hand, enlightened him, and asked him to compose Thiruppugazh.  Arunagirinadhar’s Thiruppugazh, which he sang upon enlightenment after seeing Lord Muruga, is the crown jewel of medieval Tamil literature.

Lord Muruga, the younger son of Siva, won’t you come even when I cry in despair with all my heart? Oh, Goddess Uma’s son, are my life’s accumulated sinful deeds too big a burden for you to lift?

Get on your blue peacock and hurry. Please carry your shiny spear. Do not let me lament and cry forever. Offer your hand and my inner strength and protect me.

Charanam

Even if I am overwhelmed by exhaustion after repeatedly crying, like a land that has lost its fertile soil after years of tilling and offering crops, or fall like a candle that melts by constant burning, won’t you rush to help me? Or would you rather stand there just repeating that all my actions are faulty?

I have witnessed all cries, unlimited desires, and the dirty acts that follow,  the worms and germs that invade the bodies and other terrible, ugly scenes in this saga of human suffering and torment– then, just for a minute, I contemplated and meditated on you. Even the momentary thought of the beautiful blue peacock (your chariot), shiny spear, and the two beautiful damsels (who stand on either side of you) is so enchanting and sweet. Therefore, supreme Lord Arumuga, please come and fetch me.

Is your protection and offering me refuge a result of your retrospection that you were also once all alone when you were born in the mud and scum in a pond? 

Charanam

You were born as a result of the flowing compassion from the eyes of Lord Sankara. With an embrace from the sacred Ganga, you attained this beautiful form. You were then raised in the affectionate hands of the Karthigai ladies. The most beautiful fish eyed goddess Parvathi carried you in her arms. On the other hand, for a poor soul like me rotting under my past deeds in this world all alone, you are the only savior to bestow infinite mercy.

I stood there, feeble as a string of fiber, tortured by the pangs of Kaliyuga. My eyes swelled in tears. What is the real reason for not rushing to my rescue and absolving me of all sins past and present?  I wonder if you lost track because all of your twelve eyes lost the visual acuity.

Author's Note

The anupallavi of the song refers to the story of the two sisters Amirtavalli and Sundaravalli ( Sri Mahavishnu's daughters) who performed penance to marry Lord Muruga. Pleased with their intense penance, Lord Shanmuga promised them that he will marry them in due course at an appropriate time. Lord's wedding and Shamuga narrating the past history of the sisters are described in Skandha Puranam.

I use the same medium, this Tamil language, which you used to write with your spear on the devotee’s tongue and made him a prominent poet in an assembly of intellectuals. You came at a time when the devotee was going to fall off a cliff.

Charanam

You came riding  on a peacock and like magic, you stopped him at the right time. You embraced this devotee and removed the pathetic condition he was in. You even inscribed the first line to begin with the word “Mutthaith thiru” and made him a renowned poet. Oh, Lord, who grants learning, I realized that you are the ultimate for everything in life, and I sing your glory.

All diseases of devotees who have witnessed Lord Arumuga will heal; their boundless joy will become a reality; all sins from their birth cycle will become shaky as a rootless tree and disappear like the dew drops before the sun’s rays.

I know you are thinking about that damsel who was born near the valli plant creeper. With intense love, you are attempting to put your arm around the waist of that woman Valli. But is it just to torment me? Without thinking about me for even a split second?

Author’s Note

This song is a distress call to Lord Muruga by a damsel on earth pining away and very eager to unite with him. She recognizes the intense love of Skanda towards the woman Valli, who was born near the valli creeper in a millet field, and yet her own agony is unbearable. The deliberate wordplay throughout the song is keeping up with the myriads of emotions the woman is going through, while waiting every minute of each day for her dear Lord. 

The details on Murugan’s divine love towards Valli (including her birth surrounded by valli creepers) are elaborated in Skandha Puranam.

Oh Lord, you relish in the taste of Tamil poetry. In a decent and righteous life, I constantly chanted your name, Saravanabhava.

Charanam

Are you comparing me to the gypsie girl who offered you water on this earth? Or the demon who destroyed himself or the form and transformed into a cock that became a banner for you in this same sacred Tiruchendur? Am I inferior to either of these two? Oh shepherd’s (Lord Vishnu) nephew, do you think that I still possess excessive ego and therefore I am a low life? Lord Muruga, you became a wandering divinity, please come, and rule me as your slave.
