Avvaiyar saw the child standing on top of the tree. She picked up the fallen fruits and blew off the dust. She immediately understood the pun in the question of whether she needed a “hot fruit”, and realized this was no ordinary child but was Lord Muruga. This poet says, my soul is longing for your compassionate shade, and will wait in this torturous Kaliyuga, until you are ready to dip me in the shower of your mercy.

The anupallavi and charanam of this song detail the encounter of Lord Muruga and Avvaiyar.

I have also come to realize that every action of yours has meaning and purpose. Just like an intoxicated common man, you stumbled and fell on the tribal woman Valli. But then you taught us that there is a time for everything. Valli is a soul longing to unite with the Supreme being and the time has come for her now, just as dry sesame is ready for transformation from a solid form to a liquid form (oil) through the process of churning. The message is clear, as though it comes through a thousand divine chants. Salutations to you Lord for your compassion.

This song was written upon reflection of the 2004 Tsunami in the far east. On 26 December 2004, at 07:58:53 local time (UTC+7), a major earthquake with a magnitude of 9.1–9.3 Mw struck with an epi center off the west coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia.

This song is in the form of a teaser for Lord Muruga, asking whether he will go and seek relationships only if the damsels are of celestial origin, and not engaging those living on earth. Muruga, pleased with the intense penance of the two sisters Amritavalli and Sundaravalli (both daughters of Mahavishnu), blessed them and promised that he would marry them at an appropriate time. Oh Lord Guha, your devotees feel elated that they have imprisoned you in the inner caves of their hearts. Consequently, you acquired the name Guha, which means cave in Tamil. You sport a sweet smile. You are born in a muddy pond and yet you are like a gemstone retrieved from the rubbish. You are an heir of Lord Siva’s dynasty. Please remove all our sins and blemishes and offer us a better life.
Author’s Note
Line 1 of the pallavi refers to Lord Muruga piercing the Krauncha Mountain and demolishing it. Muruga used his spear to split the Krauncha Mountain into pieces. Per Skandapuranam in Tamil, Kraunchan was a demon related to Soorapadman and tortured devas and saints by standing as a mountain in their way, killing them and relishing it as a pastime. He had even troubled Lord Siva with his illusory tactics. Once Agasthiar had cursed him to be an inanimate mountain for eternity.
Lord Muruga used the extraordinary power of his spear and split this Krauncha Mountain into two pieces and killed younger brother, Tarakasuran, as well. The details of Lord Muruga’s prowess appear in Skandapuranam.

Author’s Note
The charanam of this song traces the life story of Kumara Guruparar. He was born with Tiruchendur Lord Muruga’s blessing after performing penance. He did not speak a word until the age of five. His parents started performing their penance to the Lord again. Days went by and there was no improvement in the child’s vocabulary. His parents decided to end their lives and the family walked into the ocean. Suddenly the young lad saw a lotus flower floating, and he spontaneously recited the lines of Kandar Kalivenba.

The last line of the charanam mentions the sacred water of Skandapushkarani located 200 yards from the Tiruchendur Murugan temple. It is commonly known as நாழி கிணறு (Naazhi kiNaRu). According to the myth, Lord Muruga dug into the earth with his spear and caused the spring to gush, in order to quench the thirst of his army, after defeating Soorpadman. Oh merciful Lord Muruga, even if this poor soul has wandered in the wrong direction, and I have committed several mistakes in my life, is this really the time to judge my worth?

Oh Lord Shanmuga, you are the deity residing in, and worshipped by, the six letters Sa, Ra, Va, Na, Ba,Va. You were victorious over both celestial beings and demons when fighting in wars. Is it right for you to turn your face away from this destitute being, pretending you did not see me?

I chant about the greatness of your spear with rhetorical questions such as:
Will there be a vast ocean for me to cross in the presence of your spear?
Will there be infinite misery in the world?
Will there be tragedies in life?
Will there be any downfall in my stature?
Will there be evil thoughts and rancor? Will there be karmic fate?
Despite my chanting, Lord Muruga, will you keep evaluating my past and turn your face in the opposite direction?
