Shedding the mortal coil is like a snake casting off its old skin. One who understands this truth will naturally embrace renunciation.
Anupallavi
Those who have grown weary of this illusory life will depart from it as sand falls away from a wet cloth once the cloth has completely dried.
Charanam
One who has realized the Divine will be neither indolent nor succumb to sleep. Such a person will devote all their time to the study and contemplation of the scriptures. They will regard praise and criticism with equal detachment, share in the suffering of others as if it were their own, become a relative to the destitute, and engage only in deeds that bring good karma and joy.

The cloud of darkness is your black hair
The pot of milk is your youthful beauty
The entwining creeper is your circling waist
The unfailing waterfall is the saliva of your mouth
The cooing babble is the language of the damsel
The softness of a swan is your femininity
The ray of the sun is the brightness of your fish-like eyes
The redness of dusk is your cheek
The nectar of pollen is the taste of your lips
The incomparable one, the Tamil maiden
In this world bounded by the ocean’s waves, you stay eternally young.
I bow my head and sing your praise.
Author’s Note
This song is a tribute to the Tamil language portrayed here as a damsel, who is young, glamorous, and full of vitality. Considered an ancient Dravidian language, Tamil is rich in literature and retains a youthfulness that attracts envy by other world languages. The three assemblies or sangams of poets and scholars contributed to the language’s grammar, texts, epics, and more.

Charanam
You may have thought that you won’t be caught if you left the house of that common woman before dawn, and that no one will find out about your escapades with her. I have already been briefed about what transpired there. You may still think that you can use your oratorical skills to establish that all those stories are hearsay and lies. Just run away and get lost before I shout.
Author’s Note
This imaginary song is based on the general Sangam literature - based on arguments between a thalaivan and thalaivi. The hero returns home before dawn after spending a night at the other woman’s home, so that his neighbors will not notice him. But the heroine has already been warned of his ways from her friends. She does not want to hear any defensive arguments from him and asks him to get lost. By now she is familiar with his expressive style and skills of persuasion.

I just saw the procession of my girlfriends. They have applied mascara to their eyelashes and the turmeric paste applied on their body is adding charm to these looks. They are dressed up beautifully with silk saris and wearing colorful fragrant flowers on their tresses. They are rushing to see the wedding of Vishnu and Lakshmi at the temple.
Charanam 2
I will go in the company of my youthful friends to the temple. I will see the Lord being worshipped all over the world with his consort Vaidehi. I will briefly watch their spectacular wedding celebration, replete with Vedic chanting. As soon as it is done, I will rush back to my duties. Mother dear, please relax and take a nap until I get back.
Charanam 3
What luxury this woman must have had in her life! Perhaps she is used to riding an elephant, with a canopy offering her shelter from the heat and rain. Those days are gone. Her body has suffered deterioration, infested with contagious diseases and now by the invisible cancer. She has become fragile and needs assistance for her daily chores. She has lost considerable weight.Who would tolerate this transformation?
Charanam 4
Have I made a serious mistake in pursuing this profession? Have I lost quality time? Have I wasted my charming youth? No, I should not entertain such bad thoughts. Is it not true that service to humanity is service to the Almighty? Have I not chosen this sacred profession with a goal to follow the path of Mother Theresa?
Author’s Note
This song was written for Smt. Jayanthi Sridharan, Artistic Director of Bharathakala Kutiram, San Jose, CA, for a program held as a fundraiser for the Adyar Cancer Institute in Chennai, India.
The song is narrated from the perspective of a young woman who serves as a caretaker for cancer patients. She experiences a whirlwind of emotions as she watches her friends enjoying life — going to a Sridharan (Vishnu) wedding with Vaidegi (Lakshmi) at a nearby temple, dressed in silk saris, adorned with gold jewelry, and wearing makeup.
In the next moment, her sense of duty calls out to her. She tells her patient that she will hug her gently, administer necessary medicine on time, and sing a soothing song to comfort her. Yet a part of her wonders if she might sneak away for a few minutes — just long enough to witness the divine wedding and return quickly. She hopes the patient might rest or take a short nap until she’s back.
She reflects on the patient’s condition: perhaps this woman was once wealthy and vibrant, her health gradually deteriorating, her body succumbing to decay, disease, and eventually cancer. As the illness took over, she became fragile and completely dependent on others for even the simplest of tasks. Who could bear such a heartbreaking transformation?
The caretaker then turns inward, contemplating her own life. Has she made a mistake choosing this path? Has she sacrificed her personal time and the golden years of her youth in this demanding profession?
But ultimately, her sense of purpose prevails. She resolves to cast aside such negative thoughts. "Is it not true," she says, "that service to mankind is service to the Almighty?" After all, was it not her sacred calling to follow in the footsteps of Mother Teresa?

The heroine Thalaivi, with beautiful eyes like two blossomed blue lilies strung together, asked the hero where he had been.
Anupallavi
The hero Thalaivan feigned innocence and said that he wanted to master all the arts. He remembered that he still had a few to learn. While returning home, he went for a horse ride.
Charanam
Thalaivi then said sarcastically that she knew of the horse that he took for a ride. That horse needed everyone in the village to notice it and appreciate it. Therefore, its huge hair is parted five ways and groomed neatly. Regular trimming from the nape keeps the hair well-maintained. The whole town knows the horse now. Listen, I also noticed a lot of scratches on your body. The orderly arrangement of the scratches reminded me of the wide streets of Madurai, swept by a hand broom at daybreak with shining parallel streaks. If you still want to pose as a prince and practice riding that horse, do not come here. Get lost.
Author’s Note
This song is inspired by a dialogue between the Thalaivan (hero) and Thalaivi (heroine) in Kalith Thogai. In the narrative, the heroine suspects that the hero has visited the house of a Paratthai (common woman). When he claims he went for a horse ride, she confronts him directly. She questions whether the marks on his body were caused by the roughness of the horse. Unable to bear any more of his lies and deceit, she sternly admonishes him to abandon such behavior, warning that if he continues, he may never find his way back home and will be lost to her forever. விருத்தம் (viruttham)
Arjuna addresses Krishna: My typically brave heart is beating fast. I am scared that there was deceit on the battlefield today. My legs are trembling. You, Kesava, have tremendous foresight and yet you are not uttering a single word. There is no usual drum beating for the day’s victory in our camp. Everything looks dry and there is no excitement on anyone’s face. My beloved, illustrious son will run towards me to brief me about the day’s proceedings. Where is he?
Pallavi
Is this fate or is it a wicked scheme? Is it proper for a young child to die while the father is alive?
Anupallavi
I have not seen you for years. I thought I was finally going to have happy times with you. Why did you die, my son? Why did I abandon you and leave you to defend yourself at the right moment?
Charanam
I heard the news that the Kauravas surrounded you. Isn’t it true that righteousness fell at that moment? How will I look at your mother, young wife, and your offspring now and offer them my sympathies? Or will I find fault with my brothers and curse them, for not helping you at a time when you needed it badly?
விருத்தம் (viruttham)
Arjuna curses Jayadhrata and takes an oath:
Evil Jayadhrata, you deliberately blocked my brothers from Abhimanyu as they sought to protect my offspring. You became the god of death for a young boy. Listen to me, fool: I will shoot hundreds of arrows and decapitate you. I will kill you, you will soak in blood. This is certain.
Author’s Note
This song was written for Abhinaya Dance Company’s Dance Program titled : “Arjuna, A warrior’s Tale”, November 15, 2014. Mexican Heritage Theater Plaza, 1700 Alum Rock Ave, San Jose, CA. Rasika Kumar as Arjuna laments Abhimanyu’s demise in the scene.
The song is based on the scene from the thirteenth day of the Kurukshetra war between Pandavas and Kauravas. Yudhishtra sent Abhimanyu, Arjuna’s son, to stop Dronacharya from fiercely attacking. Young Abhimanyu fought like a lion and caused heavy damage to the Kaurava army. The Sindhu king, Jayadhrata, had an evil plan. He instructed the Kaurava army to keep the Pandava brothers engaged in war so that they could not save Abhimanyu.
Arjuna was elsewhere with Krishna fighting a different army based on a plan set by Drona, the commander of the Kauravas. Abhimanyu broke into the chakravyuh or encirclement of the Kaurava army. Unfortunately, Arjuna did not teach him how to get out of a chakravyuh. Seasoned warriors from the opposing army surrounded Abhimanyu, and Dushasana’s son hit him with a mace and killed him.
At the end of the day, Arjuna walked with Krishna. He told Krishna that he felt uneasy for unknown reasons and worried about whether his brothers were safe. Krishna with all his foresight did not say a word about what happened to Abhimanyu. Nearing their camp, Arjuna did not hear any triumphant drumming. Nor did Abhimanyu run to him and embrace him. He concluded that something tragic had occurred to the Pandava army.
Arjuna learnt that Jayadhrata used his power to hold enemies for a single day in a war (a boon from Lord Siva that excluded Krishna and Arjuna) so that the Kauravas could kill the lonely Abhimanyu. Jayadhrata also kicked the dead body to check if the young warrior was slain or not. Learning all of the details surrounding his son’s death, Arjuna vowed to kill the evil Jayadhrata before the next day ended. Arjuna swore that he would kill himself if he did not accomplish his goal. Pallavi
What can I say about my great fortune in life—to behold, in a single shrine, the lifted leg of Lord Siva, as well as the feet of Lord Vishnu lovingly caressed by Goddess Lakshmi?
Anupallavi
It is sheer ecstasy for the devotees’ eyes that have witnessed both these divine feet together in Chidambaram. This experience is equal to the merit of a million good deeds.
Charanam
A devotee need not seek separately the feet of Sankara, wearied by the eternal dance, or the tender feet of Narayana, fatigued from driving Arjuna’s chariot. The devotee is blessed with the vision of them together in Chidambaram.
Author’s Note
The song refers to the uniqueness of the Chidambaram shrine, where one can have darshan of both Sankara and Narayana. The present author believes that it is a rare privilege to witness Siva and Vishnu together in this sacred space. This serves as a remarkable example of a sthalam that attests to the unity of Saivite and Vaishnavite traditions. Whether the temple is referred to as Thillaisthanam or Thiruchiththirakoodam, it is this unique temple in Chidambaram that comes to mind. It is one of the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams for Saivites and one of the Divya Desam Kṣhetrams for Vaishnavites. A special feature of this shrine is the proximity of Govindaraja Perumal to the Kanaka Sabha, within the same temple complex of the Eternal Dancer. A mention of this unity is briefly discussed in :

Translation
Lines 1 -4
I woke up alone. Have I been abandoned? There is no one left for me to speak to on this earth. The day stretches endlessly. When will I meet a true friend? Where will I find a pure companion?
Lines 5 – 8
Oh, how nice those days were. We held hands and moved together in harmony. We bathed at dawn, then sang and danced. We shared our meals and our laughter. We rejoiced with the world’s merriment, and we wept together at its sorrows.
Lines 9 – 14
You were always there for me: listening to my anguish, sharing my deepest secrets, offering friendship grounded in mutual respect, living with serenity, and dying with disillusionment. Why is my soulmate still elusive? I anxiously call out to you, come before me right now.
